Forestry Equipment Recovery: Lifts a Stranded CAT Track Loader to Safety

machine recovery

Anyone in the earthmoving or forestry industry knows that equipment rarely breaks down when it’s convenient. Sometimes, situations like these call for fast crane hire to recover or move heavy machinery. Whether you’re working on a job site or in remote bushland, crane hire is essential when traditional methods just won’t work. More often than not, mechanical failures happen right in the middle of a job. These incidents usually occur far from paved roads or easy access points.

Recently, the Crane2U team was called out to exactly this type of scenario. A CAT compact track loader had suffered a major mechanical failure deep in the bush.

The Challenge: Tight Access and a Heavy Load

Driving or towing the machine out simply wasn’t an option. The environment was densely packed with trees, and the machine itself presented a unique lifting challenge—one ideally suited for crane hire solutions.

Outfitted with a heavy-duty FAE forestry mulcher on the front, the track loader’s centre of gravity was heavily shifted forward. Importantly, lifting a machine like this requires more than just hooking up some chains. It requires precision calculation to ensure the load remains level and stable once it leaves the ground.

Additionally, we had to carefully navigate the lift straight up through the tree canopy. We did this without damaging the surrounding environment or causing secondary damage to the machine’s cab or tracks.

The Crane2U Solution: Precision Rigging

To get the CAT out of the bush and onto a transport truck, we utilised a specialised rigging strategy, which is one of the advantages of professional crane hire:

  • Spreader Bar Setup: Instead of running chains straight down from the crane hook (which would crush inward on the machine’s ROPS/cab and tracks), we used a heavy-duty spreader bar.
  • Balanced Lifting: The spreader bar allowed us to drop the lifting chains straight down to the machine’s designated lifting points. This kept all pressure off the delicate components.
  • Controlled Extraction: With the weight perfectly distributed to account for the heavy mulcher, our crane operator smoothly lifted the machine up and out of the trees. This executed a flawless, zero-damage recovery.

Rely on Crane2U for Heavy Equipment Recovery
