When You Actually
Need a Crane

Most outdoor saunas sold in Australia arrive flat-packed in crates weighing about 400 to 520 kilograms, with delivery usually made to the front of the property or curb. If the crate can travel down the side of the house, two people, a pallet jack and a suitable path may be enough. Crane hire is needed when the sauna arrives fully assembled, the crate cannot pass through narrow gates, steps or steep access, an existing sauna is being relocated, or the unit is going onto a deck, terrace, rooftop or split-level yard. Fully assembled barrel saunas commonly weigh around 700 to 900 kilograms and cannot be moved safely down a side path. If none of these conditions apply, keep your money. Barrel saunas need more care than a standard box-shaped load. Their curved shape, timber finish, and lack of lifting points all affect how they need to be rigged and placed. 

  • Shape is the first challenge. Barrel saunas can roll or rotate during a lift. They need to be properly cradled and strapped so the load stays stable from pickup to placement.
  • The finish needs protection. Cedar and thermally treated timber can mark easily under lifting straps. Padding every contact point protects the visible finish from pressure marks and damage.
  • Modular and portable building lifting. Most timber saunas have no engineered lugs or rated lifting points. The load must be supported through its frame and cradles without crushing or twisting the structure.
  • Cabin saunas are simpler. Their square structure makes rigging easier, but the same rules apply: support the frame, protect the timber, and confirm suitable lifting points before the lift begins.

Yes. Saunas are considerably lighter than pool shells, so the constraint is reach rather than weight. How far past the house it has to travel determines the machine, and therefore the cost.

Cradled and strapped so the round shape is supported and the barrel cannot rotate, with padding at every contact point to protect the timber finish. Most saunas have no engineered lifting points, so the lift is designed around the structure itself.

Not with correct rigging. The risk on a sauna is strap marks and crushed edges rather than anything structural, which is why protection at the contact points is standard on these lifts.

A hard, flat, level base capable of carrying the assembled weight. Concrete slab, tiled area or a properly built timber deck are the usual choices. Pebbles, loose pavers and anything that will settle unevenly are not suitable, and the manufacturer will specify whether the base needs to run under the full footprint or just the cradles.

Physically, yes, provided the deck carries the load. That is a question for whoever built it or an engineer, since an assembled sauna plus occupants is a significant point load on a timber structure.

If the crane stands on the road, footpath or nature strip, generally yes. On most suburban streets, that is the situation, and permits take lead time, so raise it early.

Yes. Plunge tubs and ice baths usually arrive with the sauna and are lifted in the same attendance, which costs far less than a second visit.

The lift itself is quick. Setup, rigging and packing down take longer, and most bookings carry a minimum period regardless of how fast the lift goes.
