Most shed work is not on a prepared construction site, and that changes the planning.
- Ground is the first. Paddocks and unformed tracks may not support crane outriggers, especially after rain. Mats or pads can spread the load, but on very soft ground, waiting for better conditions may be safer than risking a bogged crane.
- Access is the second. Farm gates, cattle grids, trees and overhead lines can restrict crane access. Check the full route beforehand, including gate widths and turning space, so problems are found before the crane arrives.
- Travel is the third. Rural travel adds directly to the job cost. Planning the lift so the shed can be erected in one attendance usually saves more than trying to cut an hour from the crane hire.
- Sequence matters too. Have the site, components, and crew ready before the crane arrives. Avoiding a second trip to a remote property can save several hours of travel and unnecessary cost.

Delivery is the first consideration. Shed kits often arrive separately by truck, but they still need unloading. On rural sites, this usually requires a crane or telehandler, so combining unloading with the shed erection can avoid a separate attendance.
Collection can save a trip. For smaller sheds, a crane truck can collect the kit from the supplier, transport it to site and unload it in one visit. This removes a separate delivery booking and simplifies scheduling.
Staging saves crane time. Do not unload the entire kit into one pile. Place columns near their erection points and purlins where they will be needed, reducing sorting and unnecessary material handling once the crane is working.
Plan the sequence early. Matching the unloading order to the erection sequence takes little extra effort at delivery but can save significant crane time later.

What size crane do I need to erect a shed?
Usually less than people expect on capacity and more than expected on reach. Portal frame members are not heavy, but the crane often has to stand clear of the building footprint and reach across it, so radius drives the selection. Send the span and the member weights.
How long does it take to erect a shed frame?
It depends on your erection crew far more than on the crane. The crane holds each frame while connections are bolted and braced, so the pace is set aloft. Assembling rafter pairs on the ground beforehand is the single biggest time-saving available.
Can you lift an assembled frame in one piece?
Often yes, where there is room to assemble it on the ground and the crane can reach the position. It roughly halves the number of holds compared with lifting two halves and connecting at height, so it is worth planning for.

What about ground conditions on a farm?

Can wind stop shed erection?
Yes, particularly once cladding starts. Sheeting has enormous surface area and almost no weight, so it becomes unmanageable on the hook well before the framework would be affected.
What about powerlines on the property?
Rural properties frequently have lines running to the house, sheds, or pumps, and they are often less visible against open sky than in town. Where the crane works inside the specified distance,s a registered spotter is required, and we assess this during planning.
