Fiberglass Shells, Spas and Plunge Pools Craned Into Position

We lift fiberglass pool shells, spas and plunge pools into position across Melbourne. Over the house, over the fence, across the yard, and down into the excavation your installer has prepared.

Two things decide what this costs, and neither of them is the weight of the shell. It is where the crane can stand, and how far it has to reach from there.

Two Kinds of Pool Lift, Very Different Prices

Almost every pool lift falls into one of two categories, and knowing which one you have explains most of the quote. The first is a straightforward lift where the crane sets up on the street or driveway close to the excavation, lifts the shell from the truck and lowers it directly into the hole. The second is an over-the-house lift where the crane remains on the street but must clear the roofline and reach into a rear yard on a deep block. Because lifting capacity drops as the boom extends, a pool shell that needs only a small crane at five metres may require a considerably larger machine at twenty-five metres. This difference is often the biggest variable in the installation and is determined by the property rather than the pool. Send us the distance from the street to the pool location and the roof height, and we will assess your lift across Melbourne, Geelong, Bacchus Marsh and Western Victoria.

What Decides the Crane

Six things we look at when quoting a pool lift, in roughly this order.

  • Distance from the crane to the pool position. The single biggest factor. Capacity falls away as the boom extends, so a deep block needs a much larger machine than a shallow one for the same shell.
  • Roof height and what has to be cleared. The boom has to lift the shell above the roofline, trees, and any other obstruction, with clearance to spare.
  • Where the crane can set up. Street, driveway, or nature strip, and whether there is room for the outriggers to spread fully. Parked cars, narrow streets, and street trees all constrain this.
  • Overhead powerlines. Common on suburban streets and often directly in the lift path. Exclusion distances apply, and a registered spotter may be required.
  • Ground conditions. Outriggers concentrate significant load, so what the crane stands on matters, especially on a driveway or nature strip.
  • Shell size and weight. It matters, but on most residential lifts it is the least constraining of the six.
  • Photos answer most of this quickly. A shot from the street showing the frontage and the roofline, and one from the backyard showing where the pool is going.

What We Lift

Fiberglass Pool Shells

Standard pool shells lifted from the delivery truck over the house or fence and lowered into the prepared excavation.

Plunge Pools and Small Shells

Compact pools and plunge shells into courtyards, rear yards and constrained inner suburban blocks.

Spas and Swim Spas

Spas, swim spas and portable units lifted onto prepared bases, decks, balconies and elevated positions.

Precast Concrete Pools

Precast pool units, which are heavier than fiberglass and often need a larger machine for the same reach.

Pool Removals

Existing shells lifted out of the ground for disposal or relocation, including craning out where access has since been built over.

Machinery and Equipment

Excavators, bobcats and equipment craned into rear yards where side access will not allow them in.

We proudly support the construction, civil, commercial, residential and industrial construction sectors, along with infrastructure, mining, manufacturing, logistics and warehousing clients throughout Victoria. If your load is not listed here, give us a ring; chances are we have lifted one just like it.

Getting the Most Out of the Booking

Six things that shorten the billed time:

  • Excavation finished and the base prepared before the crane arrives, not on the day.
  • Cars moved off the street, including the neighbors’, with enough space cleared for the crane and its outriggers.
  • Overhanging branches trimmed along the lift path, which is your call to make and cheap to do beforehand.
  • Side gates, fences, and obstructions removed if anything has to travel at ground level.
  • Installer on site and ready, since the crane holds the shell until it is guided into position.
  • Delivery timing coordinated so the shell and the crane arrive in the right order.

Can a crane lift a pool over my house?

Yes. It is routine work, and the shell is lifted well clear of the roofline before traveling across. What determines whether it is straightforward or expensive is how far past the house the pool has to go, not the house itself.

It depends on the reach, not the weight. A shell lowered straight into a hole near the street needs a modest machine. The same shell going to the rear of a deep block behind a two-story house needs a much larger one, because capacity drops sharply as the boom extends.

The two categories are very different. A short-reach lift with the crane close to the excavation is at the lower end. An over-the-house lift on a deep block, with a larger machine, longer setup, and possibly permits, costs substantially more. Call 0457 000 637 with the address, and we will quote the actual job.

The lift itself is usually quick, often under an hour. Setup, rigging and packing down take longer, and larger machines take longer again. Most bookings carry a minimum period regardless.

If the crane stands on the road, footpath or nature strip, generally yes. Road closure approvals from council need weeks rather than days, so this is the thing to raise first when planning a date.

Very common, and it does not usually stop the job. Exclusion distances apply, and a registered electrical spotter may be required. We assess this during the site check rather than on the day.

Usually, but ask about the excavation as well as the shell. The crane can lift the pool over the house, but the digging equipment still needs a way in,n and the spoil needs a way out. Where access will not allow it, machinery can be craned into the yard too.

Yes, and it saves you money. Have the excavation finished, cars moved off the street, branches trimmed along the lift path, and your installer on site and ready. Crane time is billed whether it is lifting or waiting.

Yes. Spas and swim spas are lifted onto prepared bases, decks, and elevated positions regularly, and they are usually a smaller job than a full shell.

Yes, subject to assessment. Shells are craned out for removal or relocation, though condition and access both need checking first since the yard has often changed since it went in.

The lift is postponed. A pool shell is enormous and light, which makes it unpredictable on the hook, so the operator will reschedule rather than proceed in marginal conditions.

Site address, load weight and dimensions, lift or carry distance, access details, ground conditions and your preferred date. Photos and drawings help us confirm the right crane first go.

Cranes drive to site from 25 Rowsley Station Rd, Maddingley VIC 3340 on the Western Freeway. Because travel is billed both ways and eats into the minimum booking, where the crane comes from affects your invoice directly. On western and metro jobs, that position works in your favor. Maidstone is where these lifts get expensive if they are not planned. Long narrow blocks with the pool at the rear, houses close to the boundary, mature street trees and overhead lines on most streets. Almost every lift there is an over-the-house job with permits and a spotter involved.

Werribee and the newer western estates are generally the easier scenario. Wider streets, better frontage, shallower setbacks, and more room to set up, which often means a smaller machine and a shorter job. Caroline Springs and the Melton corridor sit between the two. Compact blocks but workable street access, with the reach to the rear yard usually being the deciding factor. We also lift pools across Sunshine, Footscray, Yarraville, Laverton, Altona, Truganina, Derrimut, Point Cook, Taylors Lakes and Melton, plus Geelong, Bacchus Marsh, Ballan, Ballarat and regional Victoria. Searching "crane to lift pool over house Melbourne" or "pool crane hire near me"? Being on the freeway corridor keeps travel time, and therefore your cost, down on western and metro lifts.
