Fiberglass materials, such as large panels, pipes, or components, are generally lighter than steel or concrete but often have a large surface area and can be delicate or awkward to handle. A Crane can effectively manage these challenges.
Here are some key points and safety considerations for this task:
🏗️ Franna Cranes and Unloading
- Suitability: Franna cranes are excellent for this task because they are highly manoeuvrable in tight areas and can drive right up to the delivery truck for efficient unloading.
- Pick and Carry: Their pick-and-carry capability means they can lift the fiberglass component off the truck and drive it directly to the placement or lay-down area with the help of a crane.
- Safety Features: Modern Franna cranes are equipped with a Load Moment Indicator (LMI) system that helps the operator monitor the load and ensure they stay within the crane’s safe operating limits, which is crucial since the capacity changes based on boom extension and articulation angle.
🛡️ Safety for Fiberglass Materials
While fiberglass is light, the primary lifting challenges are often:
- Size and Wind: Large fiberglass panels or components have a huge sail area and are highly susceptible to wind loading. This can make the load swing dangerously, even in moderate breezes, and dramatically affect the crane’s stability.
- Control Measure: Stop lifting in high winds. Use multiple, long taglines controlled by multiple personnel to manage the load’s swing.
- Delicacy and Spreading: Fiberglass can be brittle or flexible and prone to damage (cracking, bending) if the lifting force is concentrated in a small area. A crane can aid with this by providing stability.
- Control Measure: Use a spreader beam or lifting frame (often custom-made for large, irregular fiberglass shapes) to distribute the load evenly and prevent the material from bowing or buckling.
- Rigging: Use wide, soft web slings (instead of chains or wire rope directly on the load) to avoid damaging the surface or edges. Always pad sharp corners.
